Every woman has the right to live free from violence and abuse. The 1 in 3 Be Free App has been developed by Inner City Women’s Group to help achieve this goal.

The name ‘1 in 3 Be Free’ is based on the statistic that 1 in 3 women in New Zealand will experience an act of physical and/or sexual abuse from a partner or ex partner at some point in their life.

Inner City Women’s Group has worked with women affected by violence for almost 30 years. We want to help women understand that experiencing abuse and violence is not normal and help is available. We believe that when women have information about the dynamics of domestic violence they are better equipped to understand their experience earlier, seek help and be supported towards safety.

The 1 in 3 Be Free App has been created by women for women as an educational tool, and a way for women to connect with support services in their region of New Zealand, should they need to.

The 1 in 3 Be Free App is a quiz that helps women screen for indicators of all forms of domestic abuse and violence from a current or previous partner. Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse; it also includes emotional, verbal, psychological, financial and sexual abuse. Not all women’s experiences of abuse are the same, so we’ve added filtering questions to ensure the quiz is responsive to women’s different situations. At the end of the quiz, you will be able to learn more about the dynamics of domestic violence, through a series of short videos (produced by DAIP in Duluth Minnesota) based on the Duluth Power and Control Wheel. The results will reflect the answers you have given in the quiz. From there you can access a list of region specific support services if you need more information or help.
